Yesteryear Collection

Before Manchester had a Police Ambulance Service people were transported to hospital on a litter. The first horse ambulance was used in Manchester in 1896. In June 1900 police officers attended St. Johns Ambulance classes and those who gained a Certificate of Proficiency, transferred to the Ambulance Corps. The first motor ambulance cost Manchester £723-13-0d.
During the First World War boy scouts were used to assist the depleted staff.
The service remained in being under the direction of a Police Inspector until the advent of the National Health Service in 1948 whereupon Manchester City Council formed the Local Health Authority. The police ambulance staff remained with the police service when the new service was formed.
The model is dedicated to the men who worked in the police ambulance service with dedication and distinction.
